The Caribbean island

They enjoyed a leisurely Christmas soaking up the rays in St Barts and by the looks of things seem in no hurry to return to LA just yet.

Ellen De Generes and Portia De Rossi looked the picture of happiness as they strolled along the streets of the Caribbean island arm-in-arm.

Although the girls were with friends they only had eyes for each other as they made their way back to their tender.

As they set off towards their yacht Ellen gave Portia an intimate kiss on her shoulder capturing a touching moment for the happy couple.

And it seems they are not the only ones who have decided to spend some time together in St Barts, in fact it seems the whole of LA have decamped to the island.

Music mogul P Diddy has been spending some quality time with his children aboard his luxury yacht anchored in the area.

The rapper, real name Sean Combs, had his hands full with his twin girls and his older son Christian also on holiday with the family.

Diddy, who is currently single was helped out by a nanny as Christian took the opportunity to talk to some bikini-clad girls on the beach.

Star Wars creator George Lucas, Def Jam founder Russell Simmons, film producer Harvey Weinstein, actress Stephanie Seymour and playboy playmate Victoria Silvstedt are also all currently on holiday in the area.

Film mogul Lucas, 66, spent an afternoon shopping in the luxury boutiques located on the island with his girlfriend Mellody Hobson.

Melody, 41, seemed to take to the products on offer and the couple returned to their tender laden with bags from Louis Vuitton and Roberto Cavalli.

The Investment Firm President relaxed in a white kaftan and orange straw hat while Lucas went for Island chic in a blue striped shirt and cream shorts.

Miramax President Harvey Weinstein also took to the water enjoying a boat trip around the Caribbean waters.

Meanwhile Russell Simmons indulged his girlfriend Heidi Allende to a spot of shopping who was spied carrying a shopping bag after the couple had lunch.

The model, who also donned the island dressed code sporting a low-cut green kaftan, had visited the luxury Calypso store in the town.

The pair bucked the trend travelling by boat and drove off in a mini cooper convertible following lunch.

The island is in no shortage of bikini clad models and Playboy playmate Victoria Silvstedt has been flaunting her curves to other island visitors.

The Swedish blonde was accosted by two rather young fans during a stroll on the beach who seemed eager to chat to the beauty.

And veteran cover girl Stephanie Seymour is also holidaying in the area and has been spotted striking some bizarre poses on the beach.

The 42-year-old cavorted around in the sea sporting moves more appropriate for a photoshoot than a family holiday.

St Barts - Beach bum

She's already been putting on very public shows of affection with the husband she's recently reunited with - but Stephanie Seymour appeared to be putting on a quite different performance on her holiday in St Barts yesterday.

The 42-year-old former supermodel's thoughts are clearly never far from her previous day job as she struck a series of bizarre poses on the sand and in the surf in a flesh-coloured bikini.

A Victoria's Secret Angel and ex of Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose in days gone past, the beauty put her body into a series of odd-looking shapes more suited to a pop video than a family vacation.

Girl on film: Stephanie Seymour frolicked on the beach at St Barts yesterday with her children as if she was in a 1980s pop video

The brunette is enjoying a beach stay in the Caribbean with three of her children - Peter, 17, Harry, 13, and daughter Lily, 6 - together with her art-loving paper tycoon husband of 15 years, Peter Brant, 63.

The couple revealed in September that they were calling off their acrimonious divorce despite already spending millions each on legal fees and had got back together.

They first announced their split in March 2009 and embarked on a bitter battle rife with allegations of infidelity, drug abuse and wild spending sprees and embroiled their children in the process.

Police were called to the couple's home following Seymour's complaint that Brant's security assaulted her, Brant accused the model of drug use and was seeking sole custody of their three children.

However, their relationship seems to be in great shape now - much like Stephanie's beach-ready body.

She's had years of practice, however, having started modelling aged just 14.

She went on to grace more than 300 magazine covers and became one of Sports Illustrated's most celebrated swimsuit models - possibly helping her prowess at the seaside poses above.

Spartia Beach

Spartia Beach Kefalonia

Spartia Beach Kefalonia

Spartia beach is located just below the village of the same name in in the Livatho region on the island, it is also close to the island’s airport. The capital also being only a few miles away, so a good base for exploring the rest of Kefalonia.
The beach is quite small with the backdrop of white limestone cliffs that reach high to the sky. To reach the small sandy cove section you will have to clamber over a few small rocky outcrops, nothing much. Spartia is a pretty little beach with its clear aquamarine water and soft white sand. There are yachts just off the coast here, as there is sailing center based here.
This beach is probably idea for a stop off and swim rather than a days visit as there are no facilities except for a taverna near the beach. There are no sun beds or sunshades to hire.
A south facing bay means that it is sheltered from the north west winds. Conditions here are ideal for sailing and wind-surfing.

Ammes Beach Kefalonia

Ammes Beach Kefalonia

Ammes is situated in the south-west part of the island, in the area of Svoronata, a couple of kilometers from the capital of Kefalonia. The beach is only a few minutes from the island’s airport and you may observe the occasional low flying jet, but this district is peaceful and full of vibrant vegetation.
Around this area there a couple of small similar beaches including Porto Heli , Aghia. Pelagia, and Mina .
Ammes was the first beach of the area to be discovered by tourists some 20 years ago when the large hotel called the Irina was built. , next to the airport The sand is notably more orange here than the bright white of some beaches on the island. There is a slight wind here and the water remains shallow for a long distance out to sea A great beach for families. You will be able to purchase refreshments from the beach bar, or if you fancy a meal at lunch time there are plenty of restaurants on the waterfront or a little further away in the local village of Svoronata.
The beach is approximately 100 meters long and can get crowded in the summer months especially August, although you should be able to find a little piece of beach for yourself during other times.
Ammes beach is made up of sand with few big rocks and incased by small dunes. There are loungers and sun shades to rent, or simply throw your towel down! Easy access from the nearby coastal road which runs from Svoronata to Ammes. Parking is allowed along beach top road.

Lourdata Holidays

General Information

This site exists to make it easy to travel independently to the resort village of Lourdata, in the area of Lourdas, on the Greek island of Kefalonia and stay in high-quality studios and apartments at reasonable cost. It is also to repay, in some small way, the people of Lourdata for the generosity and kindness they have shown over many years.

Lourdata is the village at the centre of the area known as Lourdas on the Greek island of Kefalonia. (or Kefallonia, Kefallinia, Cephalonia, Cefalonia) - even the Greeks can not agree how to spell the name!

This site gives some general information about the island of Kefalonia, the area of Lourdas, and particularly the village of Lourdata. There are details of studios and apartments which are available in Lourdata, arrangements for airport transfers, taxi and car hire information. Also included are the restaurants and bars of Lourdata.

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is approximately 90Km (60 miles) south of the island of Corfu. The village of Lourdata is in the south-west of the island. It is mountainous with the highest point of Kefalonia (Mount Enos, 1627 metres) to the north of the village of Lourdata.

This range of mountains gives this part of Kefalonia its own special climate, in addition to a spectacular backdrop. Because it has a sub-tropical climate, there are many citrus trees in the area of Lourdas and the small market gardens close to the beach produce a huge variety of fruit and vegetables. Sadly, in recent years the number of these working gardens has declined. Until the 1950's, all this land was intensively cultivated and Lourdas supplied the earliest fruit and vegetables to the whole of Greece.

The upper part of the mountain (above 1,000 Metres) is the Enos National Park. It is covered in pine forests - mainly of black pine and the kefallonian pine, which is exclusive to Kefalonia and the adjacent island of Ithaca. The national park contains much wildlife, including the wild horses for which it is famous.

The island has almost unlimited water coming from springs on the mountain and as a result is one of the greenest of all Greek islands. These springs are the source of the tap water which meets the standards of the EEC Drinking Water Directive, however cold bottled water is available at all the shops and restaurants for those who prefer it.

Lourdas from the sea

Lourdas from the sea

Lourdas bay from the air

Lourdas Bay as seen from the air.
The beach which extends for the length of the bay is about 4Km (2½miles) long - mostly golden sand, with pebbles at the southern end of the main beach, although this can change with the weather.

Main beach from Klimatis

The Lourdas bay from the headland known as Klimatis.

The beach has the European blue flag. There is a lifeguard and showers. Umbrellas and sunbeds are available for hire.
One umbrella and two sunbeds will cost approximately €6.00 per day.

Escape Club boat hire

Boat hire is available at the beach from Escape Club Rental Boats.

The beach

The beach

At the beach there are five restaurants, a mini-market and two bars.

The new mini-market

Just above the beach, on the road to the village, is a new, larger mini-market.

The Village Square

At the centre of the village of Lourdata is the square with its enormous plane tree - at least 250 years old.
Here are the village shop and the car hire office. Close by are two restaurants and a couple of bars. At the shop, as well as buying all the day-to-day essentials, you can enjoy a coffee, a beer, or a soft drink in the atmosphere of a traditional kafeneion. Most of the available apartments and studios are close to the village centre.

The road from the village to the beach is a little less than 1Km (about ½mile) and one can stroll to the beach (where there are also apartments) in less than 10 minutes. However, because the square is about 80 metres (about 250 feet) above sea level, the return will take at least twice as long. The best way is to stroll from one patch of shade to the next, stop, admire the views and talk with anyone you meet!

During the season there is a bus, provided by the local council, which goes to and from the beach several times each day. The times of the bus are posted at each of its stopping places. The fare is nominal - one Euro.

For the more energetic there are a many quiet roads and tracks to walk. These will take you through olive groves, orchards - where you will see many varieties of citrus fruit, figs, pomegranates, apricots, and market gardens (closer to the sea) where local families grow much of their own produce.

Ayia Paraskevi

Above the village, near the water tower, is the pre-earthquake church of Ayia Paraskevi.

Church Interior

The original interior walls still have their fourteenth century frescoes.

Spring of Paliofournos

A walk of about three-quarters of an hour, via the spring of Paliofournos (old bakery), will take you to the Sissia Monastery.

Sissia Monastery

Sissia Monastery is traditionally believed to have once belonged to Saint Francis of Assissi.

Sissia Old Monastery

In the trees, just below the present monastery, are the remains of the old monastery that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1953.

By going up the road from the village and then taking a left turn, you can walk to Trapezaki Beach in less than one hour - perhaps returning along the beach.

There are no banks or cash machines in the village of Lourdata.

The Lara Hotel

Money and travellers cheques can be exchanged at the reception in the Lara Hotel. http://www.lara.gr/
The Lara website has a wealth of information about the locality, the island, local walks and excursions.

In the capital, Argostoli, you will find branches of all the major Greek banks, all of which have cash machines.

Argostoli is an excellent shopping centre with a wide variety of shops, a large market by the harbour, and many cafes and restaurants. In the town are the Archaeological museum and the Historical Folklore museum at the Coryiallenia Library. Travel to the capital will take about 30 to 40 minutes by car or taxi. As of 1st October 2008, if you wish to park in the bays by the lagoon, it will cost 2 Euro for up to 2 hours. Tickets can be purchased at any of the kiosks. Parking is still free in the car parks, but with the increase of traffic during the last few years finding a parking place within the town is becoming more difficult. However, it is still relatively easy to park in the outskirts and everywhere is within easy walking distance.

Xi Beach Kefalonia

Xi beach

Xi Beach Kefalonia

Xi Beach Kefalonia

The largely unknown region Paliki, set out into the western sea, is one of the most fertile in Kefalonia, there lies plenty of fields along with many tiny villages just waiting for the adventurous traveller to stop and seek.
Along its southern shore the resort of Xi, with it’s welcoming safe water and fine red sandy beach which is dressed in sun loungers and large fabric cotton parasols, which has a “days gone by look” about them. Be careful not to crash your head on these brollies as they have a thick metal rim and do not move like most lighter weight parasols.
The beach itself is situated a few kilometers south of the town of Lixouri. There is a good sized car park next to the beach.
It is a very long beach and it is famous for the colour of its sand which is reddish brown in shade.
Xi has whitish cliffs which drop into the turquoise waters either side of the blanket of reddish sand which looks quite amazing.
These cliffs have an appeal for the locals who say that they have medicinal powers to cure skin disorders ect and is generally good for the skins’ condition. They pick small handfuls of the cliff which is very soft and crumbly called glean then mix it with the sea water until it forms a paste then rub it onto the skin, some people use it all over the body. This coating is then left to dry on the skin. Basically it is a free clay mask!!
The water is very shallow and good for families, you can enter the sea and wade out quite a long way and always feel the soft sand between your toes, which is a bonus as on Kefalonia as many beaches require you to adorn rock shoes for your comfort as the seabed and even some of the beaches are often stony or rocky.
Just up from the beach is a good sized restaurant where you can have a drink or a meal. Surrounding area of Xi beach is quite lunar in appearance. This beach is best reached via taxi or hire car, unless you are staying in accommodation near the beach. There is no resort as such here, just somewhere to eat, relax, swim and sunbathe, so unlike Lassi, Skala, Poros and many other beach resorts there are no shops to wander around girls!!!! Perfect I can here the men saying.
There are however certain water sports available at the beach, including jet ski, water ski, banana, bike and beach volleyball.

Lassi beach Kefalonia

Lassi Beaches

Lassi beach Kefalonia

Lassi beach Kefalonia

The resort of Lassi is blessed with some of the best sandy beaches on Kefalonia. One drawback is these beaches are more commercialised than others on the island.
Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos are both lovely sweeping golden sandy beaches with beautifully clear cobalt blue water and separated by a split of land which has a perpendicular rock face at the end in the shape of a whales tail called Tourkopodaro (Turks Foot). This unusual slightly arched shaped piece of land is a small beach in itself with water both sides of it. Both larger beaches have been awarded the European blue flag for cleanliness. .
This area is one of the most popular Kefalonian beaches and can becomes very busy in the summer months. Sunbeds and shades are lined in regimented rows with hardly any room to move without standing on someone else’s towel !, this maybe a drawback for some who prefer the quieter beaches, nether the less these beaches are popular but obviously are not every visitors cup of tea. .
Makris Gialos which means long beach is located just a short stroll from the main road and is possibly the most popular of the Lassi beaches. There is a little shade in the morning provided by a steep slope behind Makris Gialos, also there are a few trees which can give a little shade later in the day. There are some fairly steep steps which lead down to the beach from the road, so maybe not idea for people with walking difficulties? This beach is long, however quite thin, it can look overcrowded at times with beach furniture crammed next to each other to accommodate the beach lovers needs. You will find bars and tavernas for refreshments and also watersports.
Platys Gialos, which means wide beach is very similar to Makris Gialos but a little smaller with showers and changing rooms.
Two smaller less commercialized beaches near to Lassi are Gradakia Beach and Kalamia Beach. Kalamia is the most northerly of the beaches. A narrow sweep of sand and shingle situated in a very pretty little bay, with shallow water and excellent for snorkeling. You can reach the beach from the main road via a track. Here you will find sunbeds, shades and a small bar for refreshments.
Gradakia Beach, this is a delightful small deep inlet, not so busy as Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos, but lovely sand and calm clear seas. You will find sun loungers and shades with more space to sunbathe. A bar provides all facilities required.

Kefalonia Greek ionian islands

Assos Village Kefalonia
Kefalonia Greek ionian islands

Kefalonia is an island situated in the Ionian sea and is part of a group of Greek island known as the Ionian’s which include the famous tourist islands of Corfu, Lefaks and Zante. Kefalonia or is that Kefallonia or even Cephalonia ! has many excellent tourist resorts the biggest being at Lassi, Poros, Skala and Sami. Smaller more laid back resorts are at Lourdata, Katelios, Assos, Argostoli, Lixouri and Fiscardo to name a few.

The island is not only the largest amongst the Ionian Islands, but also features the highest mountain which is Mount Einos which reaches a height of 1627M with beautiful Kefalonian firs crowning the summit. On a clear day the summit provides stunning views of the neighboring island of Zante (Zakynthos) and Ithaca.

The beauty of Kefalonia can be seen from just about everywhere on the island. The rugged hills and the mountainous terrain paint a commanding backdrop for the piercingly clear shades of Turquoise and Azure Blue water which hug the shores of the many breathtaking beaches and pretty fishing villages which this island is proudly mother to. The mountain sides flourish in the Spring and the famous Kefalonia Fir trees which are in abundance will catch your attention standing tall and seeming to cast a protective eye over the landscape . In the Spring and early Summer hills and mountains are decorated by nature with many bright and vividly coloured flowers which grow wild and set the scene for the perfect photograph or oil painting.

Kefalonia is home to many pretty and impressive churches some stand precariously on hillsides and others mingle neatly within their villages. Most are painted in calm and harmonious colours which melt into the landscape with their bell towers reaching up to the blanket of achingly blue sky.

In August of 1953 a devastating Earthquake rocked the island fiercely and violently destroying practically all buildings both in towns and villages. Many ruins still stand as a poignant reminder of the day that altered the architectural appearance of Kefalonia forever due to the fact that the damage erased most of the islands elegant Venetian architecture with only the very north of the island around Fiscardo escaping lightly.

Most visitors to the island arrive via charter flights. These fly from a large selection of UK Airports. If you decide to travel independently then Kefalonia flights are available to buy over the internet, which are generally cheaper than those sold in travel agents. A Kefalonia holiday offers you so much variety, whether you wish to stay and relax in one of the many Kefalonia Villas that are mostly privately owned, however some are available from you usual tour operator, holiday in one of the larger kefalonia hotels, which are mainly located in the larger and commercialized resorts or have your own room or apartment, these are found practically everywhere on the island. Kefalonia apartments tend to be a little basic, so you may need to take small electrical appliances with you e.g. a travel kettle, iron and hairdryer.

Car hire, even if only for a couple of days is highly recommended to see the wonderful sights this jewel of the Ionians oozes. The purchase of a detailed Kefalonia map is advised as the maps provided by the car hire firms are usually very basic, missing important information, which can lead to you possibly getting lost!. The spirit of the island filtrates around the herb scented air and seems to act as an aromatherapy for relaxation and invites you to simply experience and explore the real natural splendor of this island.

As soon as you step off the aircraft you will be able to smell the aroma of the native herbs which grow along the roads and in the fields which are close to Kefalonia airport. This aim of this site is to hopefully give you information about the island of Kefalonia and what she has to offer. We have covered the main resorts, towns and villages. Most of the Kefalonia information gathered for this site has come from our personal experiences of the island.

Rock Pacific islands

An undersea earthquake has struck off the coast of California and a 7 magnitude tremor has been felt near the Vanuatu islands.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the California tremor occurred at 3.31am this morning, about 31 miles southeast of San Clemente Island and 43 miles south of Avalon.

The quake near the Vanuatu islands is the fourth to hit the archipelago and the sixth to affect the region in just 24 hours.

earthquakes hit Vanuatu

Idyllic: But four undersea earthquakes have struck near Vanuatu, a chain of 83 islands, in the last 24 hours

It comes after emergency services were placed on full alert on tourist islands around Fiji after three earthquakes struck last night.

The newest quake, measured at 3.8 on the Richter scale, was felt in parts of Orange County, including Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, but police said there had not received any calls about damage.

It follows three quakes yesterday which struck near the Vanuatu archipelago and south of the Philippines.

The first, with a magnitude of 7.8, struck 183 miles north west of the island of Santo, the most northerly of the islands in the Vanuatu group, at a depth of 21 miles.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, based in Hawaii, immediately issued a regional tsunami warning covering Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia, with thousands of islanders moving away from the coastline.

Huntington Beach

Tremor: A quake measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale was felt in Huntington Beach, California, this morning

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage from officials in Vanuatu, a chain of 83 islands.

It was followed hours later by two smaller quakes, measuring 7.3 and 7.7, in virtually the same location.
